Wednesday opened with a snowstorm. Giant fat flakes clinging to tree limbs and telephone wires, the kind of snow people wish for every Christmas. The day grew warmer, the snow melted – three seasons in a work day’s time. You can’t trust March. Its unpredictable weather, a month without identity: not quite winter, but not yet spring. The year starts for me here, a place where I can leave behind the dark months and push forward to spring with its obvious “fresh start” metaphors. Reorganize, reflect. Stay focused and allow myself the luxury to dream.

Caught in a whirlwind of productivity this past month and now it’s finally winding down. I’ve been daydreaming about a ranch vacation in the Dakotas and Wyoming (I really want to see that part of the country). I am happy with the writing I’ve  done lately, something I haven’t felt in a long time. I’m moving to a different position at my day job starting Monday, and shooting photos somewhere between family’s and friends’ baby showers, confirmations, first communions. A spring full of ceremony, of turning my attention to the outside after a fruitful winter.

It feels as if this year has gone on forever and it’s only March. February is one awful dream. Which surprises me because I didn’t feel disconnected as I tried (try) to adjust to daily life right after my mother’s death. If anything, I felt so much, I thought my heart would burst. Now I’m exhausted. I am trying to catch up with emails and phone calls. I am trying to get through a book that I’ve read for the past month. The point is, I am trying. On Sunday, I went over my friend Jody’s house to take some photos. I wasn’t in the mood to do self portraits, but Jody made a great model. Once I’m behind the camera, I become lost in that moment. It calms my nerves, keeps my brain from racing and the sadness quiet. It keeps me going.
