evening in Bellevue.

Evening in Bellevue.

Bellevue is a small town off Route 65 along the Ohio River, across from Neville Island. It’s most famous around the area for its “Live, Worship, Shop” sign and for being one of the few dry towns. It’s like most river towns in Western Pennsylvania: crumbling brick roads winding up steep hills with clusters of large, early 19th-century homes, some a little bruised from the wear, but perfect for people like Jeff and me who don’t mind. When I was in junior high, I wrote an essay on three things I wanted to carry out in life which I found recently among my mother’s papers: 1. To travel to Hungary (check). 2. To write a book of short stories (half-check) and 3. To live in a giant, old house. Any time Jeff and I pass a late-Victorian with a rambling porch, we argue over who gets to set up their cave in the tower. Now I want a place of our own with empty, clean space flooded in light.

Mirror shots for me are like bowls of tuna casserole on a cold, wintry Sunday afternoon – familiar, comforting. I never tire of them, no matter how cliché  or overdone they can be. Each project I do, I usually get a chance to sneak one. They’re perfect on-the-go shots, and catching an awesome image while you’re doing something else is the best gift of all – the surprises of photography, oh how they make me happy.

day 16: on the floor

day 16: on the floor

I haven’t felt much like blogging these past few weeks because, as the holiday approaches and the days darken, I struggle with positive ways to move through it. And with last week’s shootings in Oregon and Connecticut, I felt uncomfortable posting about the ordinary, everyday things in which I find joy. Jeff and I often talk about politics and social issues with each other, but outside people whom I’ve  known a long time, it is difficult for me to articulate how I think or feel about these things to the Internet world. I’ve retreated to my iPhone camera for creative refuge, possibly my main reason for even buying one. Maybe iphoneography is lazy photography, but I love its convenience and the social networking aspect of sharing photos with others; it challenges me to visually document my daily life and relieves the pressure of always trying to find the right words.
