The Long Way Home

I resolved this winter  to actually do things besides lounging around in my union suit watching Netflix. Jeff and I have been roller skating a few times, and this past Friday we went night sled riding with a group of friends near a house that looks like a castle. It was pitch-dark in the snow bowl and nineteen degrees, and I wore layers of wool tights, tees and sweaters and a skirt. But I got a lovely rush of warmth as I coasted down a giant hill on a plastic blue disk, laughter echoing in the street somewhere above me. I’ve also started a photo project documenting our home through objects and self-portraiture. As winter settled in after months of road trips, I panicked.  I didn’t have any photos left to post , and we haven’t had a scanner so I could scan vintage photos from our collection; I re-imagined where we lived. I love sleeping in the kitchen and reading in a library on the other side of a curtain from where Jeff makes guitars. All the flea market finds are becoming more like family to me. The project is a personal journey and I’m excited to see where it takes me.

It’s funny how we can live surrounded by objects that we no longer see. I like the fact that you’re bringing them to the light, giving them a moment of re-appreciation, a chance to tell their stories.

And the guitars, they look like they’re having fun already.

The guitars are definitely having fun, along with the man who makes them!

Re-examining the familiar is what I try to do when I can’t travel too.
