The Long Way Home

Hvala is ‘thank you’ in Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian and much prettier-sounding. I love how there is no vowel between the ‘h’ and the ‘v,’ and how in Croatia, it was often shortened to ‘vala’ when calling out to shop owners as you left their stores. If I didn’t know what it meant, I would think it was some sort of Balkan casserole of sausage, rice and peppers. It reminds me of my travels in Croatia and how if it weren’t for that trip, I wouldn’t be doing half the things I do 5 years later, like photography and writing this blog. It opened worlds for me and gave me the courage to write without shame. Thank you to all the people who have supported me through my travels and my art and the readers of this blog. The comments and the emails I’ve received along the way mean a lot to me. It’s inspiring ‘meeting’ new people and incredible how small the world seems because of the Internet.

Now excuse me while I go jump on the bed to wake my husband. He owes me a pancake breakfast. Have a great holiday!
