Summer = community block parties, which we never get to take part in because we don’t even know our neighbors here in the city. My friend Becky organized one for her neighborhood, despite the sweltering heat. I ran around with my camera as kids circled the adults like sharks on their scooters and skateboards. We enjoyed music by the Four Roses and the best part, an evening storm around 9. Bikes wheeled into garages, picnic tables carried under awnings, beer kegs abandoned when the first drops hit the pavement. We sat on the back porch with Becky, Brad, and the kids, and Su and my oldest friends Mary and Bill, watching the lightning slice through the sky – one of my favorite moments this summer.

I’m so glad we could be there this year — I still think about that eggplant parm dish, sooo good!
