We are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but not quite knowing what or where home is. We glimpse it sometimes in our dreams, or as we turn a corner, and suddenly there is a strange, sweet familiarity that vanishes almost as soon as it comes…–Madeleine L’Engle, from The Rock That Is Higher
I’m afraid of driving on highways, which is why I prefer to take a roundabout route when I’m on the road. I am lucky to have uncomplaining friends and my patient husband, Jeff, who indulge my travel neuroses. When we arrive home after a road trip, they forgive my irrationality because maybe we found something along the way that we didn’t know existed if we had taken the interstates – Pretty Boy Floyd’s death mask in the laundry room of an old funeral parlor, a building shaped like a teapot or walking across the shortest covered bridge in the world. Travel for me isn’t just about arriving, it’s about the journey along the way – the perfect excuse for me to put my photography and writing to work while I search for that place called home. My blog is a memoir for my past travels, as well as a place for escapism when I’m not traveling — through food, art, books and all the crazy, weird places Jeff and I find in America when we just get in the car and go.

Strangely enough, your way of seeing feels like an extension of my own… my own seeing or my own dreams, I’m not sure. I might become a rabid fan.

Comment by Lisa October 7, 2010 @ 10:02 AMThat’s so funny that you mention this because when I saw your pictures on flickr, I felt the same way (I was too shy to say, so I’m glad that you did!). Your Saint John photos are so haunting and lovely. It’s a gift to be able to see what is familiar as if through someone else’s eyes – and that’s what your photos do.
Thanks so much for the comment, it’s so nice to read!
Hi Lisa – we’ve never met, but I think I may have worked with and been friends with your mom when we were in high school. By any chance is your mom’s maiden name Linda Plaikner? Please contact me, even if I’m wrong. Thanks very much.
